Entering your first horse show is an exciting milestone in any rider’s journey. It can also be a bit overwhelming if you don’t know what to expect. Whether you’re showing in-hand, under saddle, or just coming to soak in the experience, proper preparation can make the day smooth, successful, and enjoyable for both you and your horse.
1. Understand the Show Environment
Before show day, take time to learn about the venue and show type. Schooling shows are usually more relaxed, while rated competitions may require additional memberships and attire. Ask your trainer what to expect and review the class list so you can feel confident about where you’ll be and when.
2. Practice Show-Day Routines at Home
Leading up to the show, incorporate aspects of the show routine into your lessons and daily care. Practice grooming for competition, loading into a trailer, and riding in environments that simulate a busy warm-up arena. The more familiar your horse is with the elements of show day, the better.
3. Pack Like a Pro
The night before, double-check that everything you need is clean, packed, and ready to go. Essentials include:
Rider attire (show shirt, jacket, helmet, boots, gloves)
Horse gear (saddle, bridle, saddle pad, grooming kit)
Health paperwork (Coggins test, vaccination records)
Water, hay, and feed for your horse
Snacks and water for you!
Having a checklist can help you stay organized and avoid last-minute stress.
4. Stay Calm and Flexible
Even with the best planning, unexpected things can happen. Maybe your class runs late, or your horse is distracted by the new environment. Stay calm and remember that every show is a learning opportunity. Your horse will look to you for confidence, so lead with kindness and clarity.
5. Celebrate the Experience
No matter the outcome, your first show is a big accomplishment! Take photos, support your barnmates, and reflect on the positives. Growth comes from experience—and your first show is the first step toward many more.
