Entering the show ring for the first time as a new horse and rider team is an exciting milestone, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. With the right preparation and mindset, however, your first competition season can be a positive and rewarding experience. Whether you're competing in dressage, hunters, jumpers, or eventing, these tips will help set you and your horse up for success.
Build a Strong Foundation at Home
Before stepping into the show arena, ensure you and your horse have a solid foundation in training. Focus on consistency in your flatwork, confident course riding, and exposure to new experiences. Simulating a "show environment" at home with dress rehearsals — complete with show attire, decorations, and new obstacles — can help desensitize your horse and prepare you mentally.
Choose the Right Shows
Start with smaller, local competitions that offer a welcoming atmosphere. Schooling shows or unrated events are fantastic for building experience without the added pressure of large crowds or highly competitive divisions. As you both gain confidence, you can move up to rated shows or larger venues.
Focus on the Experience, Not the Ribbons
Your first season is all about learning — not just winning. Focus on achieving personal goals like completing a course, staying relaxed under pressure, or improving your scores. Celebrate small victories along the way, and remember that every experience, good or bad, is a valuable learning opportunity for you and your horse.
Be Prepared and Organized
A successful show day starts long before you arrive at the venue. Pack everything you need the night before — including tack, grooming supplies, show clothes, paperwork, and snacks for both horse and rider. Have a checklist to avoid last-minute scrambling. Arrive early to allow time for acclimating your horse to the environment and walking your courses or test areas.
Prioritize Your Horse’s Comfort
New environments can be stressful for horses. Set up a comfortable stall or trailer space if stabling overnight, bring familiar hay or grain, and give your horse plenty of time to settle. Be patient and supportive if your horse needs extra reassurance — a calm, confident rider can make a big difference.
Lean on Your Support Team
If possible, bring a trainer, experienced friend, or barn mate to your first shows. Having someone there to help you warm up, offer encouragement, and troubleshoot any unexpected challenges can make the experience far less stressful. Don’t be afraid to ask for help — everyone started somewhere!
Reflect After Each Show
Take time to review what went well and what could be improved after each competition. Keep a journal to track your progress, document your goals, and note what strategies worked best. This will help you plan for future shows and measure your development over the season.
